Newsboy Mine

Morristown, AZ

May 30, 2010

From the Montezuma Mine, we headed back toward the gate, and turned right (south) on another track. This took us around a hill and back north, where we came to the Newsboy Mine. GPS coordinates are 33 degrees 50.837N, 112 degrees 40.008W.

The Newsboy consists of 4 or 5 shafts, all fenced off with barbed wire, and for good reason. They all looked extremely unsafe. We contented ourselves with surface collecting.

mindat.org lists alunite, anglesite, gold, kaolinite, vanadinite and wulfenite from this locality. Its also supposed to have fluorescent calcite.

I saw very little fluorescence in the material I shipped home, and no crystallized material under the microscope.

On to the next field trip, the Queen of Sheba Mine
