OSCEOLA #11 and #12 MINES

Osceola, Houghton Co., MI

August 12, 2006

The Osceola #11 and #12 dump. In the foreground Kyle Smith is showing his find of crystallized copper from the Rockland Mine.

The Osceola #13 Hoist

This was another site thatís easy to reach. From US 41 in Osceola, turn west on Millionaire St. Follow this 0.4 miles and make a right on Mine St. The dump (apparently used by both Osceola #11 and Osceola #12) is on the left. To the right, on the other side of Mine St. the Osceola #13 Hoist can be seen.

The material found here is very similar to that found at the nearby Laurium Mine: very nice micro epidote and quartz, adularia, prehnite and copper.

After this trip I returned to the trailer, changed clothes and ate lunch. After lunch we went to the Copper Country Clubís show at Portage Township Elementary School in Houghton. This is on the top of the hill overlooking Houghton, and you can see the Quincy Mine Hoist on the top of the next hill on the other side of the canal.

The next morning we packed up the trailer, hitched and headed home. We made it home on one day, although it was late. I had to park the trailer behind the house in the dark. We just left it hitched to the van, went in and went to bed. I unloaded and unhitched the next morning.
