On the morning of May 18, 2002 I set out from the motel in Cedar City, following directions provided by Margaret Malm. (Thanks, Margaret!).
Going West from Cedar City on 200 North, it becomes
Route 56 shortly after passing under I-15. About 5 miles out of town I turned
right on Iron Springs Road. Following this another 5.5 miles I came to a dirt
road on the right, just before a cattle guard. I took that road across a
railroad track, and then right paralleling the track. After another 1 to 2
miles the road went left between two hills, and eventually to the flat area
seen in the pictures, which is cut by a few washes. In the washes there are
many loose shiny black octahedral Magnetite crystals, and hunks of massive
Magnetite, some with pockets of crystals. As a result, collecting is easy- just
crawl on the ground in a likely spot, which can be seen from the sparkle of the
crystals when the sunlight hits them.
