GORGE SAND AND GRAVEL PIT, GREEN RIVER, SWEETWATER CO., WY

Our first stop on our westward trip was in Wyoming. We got off I-80 at Red Desert to try to find the uranium prospects in the area, but had no luck. It wasn’t too surprising, since we had very little information to go on.

A few hours later, we got off I-80 again in Green River, WY to see if I could get into any of the Trona mines in the area. We followed signs to an FMC mine, but found it posted and in operation. On the way back to I-80 we turned into a dirt road leading in the direction of the mine, and it took us to a sand & gravel pit that appeared to be idle or abandoned. I picked up a piece of what appeared to be Trona (subject to further investigation) and a number of agates, so the trip wouldn’t be a total waste of time.
